Starting with version 1.8., Midgard uses UTF-8 as the default character set, so on updating, old databases have to be converted with Datagard.
On Debian 3.1 and older, this means you'll have to update to MySQL 4.1 and possibily recompile php4-mysql as described here: http://www.nemein.com/people/piotras/php4_and_mysql_extension.html
[edit] Replication
Exorcist does not support 1.8 out of the box. It is possible to use it for most replication tasks by using the CVS version and adapting the replication schema, but Repligard in conjunction with a MidCOM Component is the tool of choice for this series.
